SRK's fourth disaster in a row!

-Yogendra Chaturvedi

Popularly known as the ‘King Khan’ or ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’, Shah Rukh Khan’s rise as a star in the 1990s was both remarkable and significant because he turned out to be a much-needed alternative to the macho men on screen. He was an actor who wasn’t afraid of weeping on screen, who wasn’t fundamentally interested in asserting his masculinity and who was ready to be something his peers weren’t; vulnerable.

But over the last few years, there’s been a distinct shift in his persona. He now wants to resurface as a masculine figure. In Imtiaz Ali’s latest release Jab Harry Met Sejal, he wears shirts whose top three buttons are invariably open, displaying his chest, which has – what else but – a tattoo. In one of the songs, he lifts his shirt to display his torso. In another, he talks about a past lover, a woman called Kulwant Kaur, but feels shy in taking her name, because people will apparently ‘think that I’m remembering a man.’ In the movie, Khan seems to be scared of something, but is probably clueless about it. Or maybe, we know the answer that he doesn’t.

Shah Rukh’s fans have deep rooted memories of his romantic image. His stammering and overacting was applauded by his millions of fans and these were considered to be his style. It is a pity that he is doing the same old type of roles of a lover boy in many of his recent movies and not moving according to his age and likings of his fans. The debacle of his few latest films is a proof of his megalomaniac attitude. Starting from Dilwale, Fan, Raees and now, Jab Harry Met Sejal. He is ruining the legacy of romance and the sweet nostalgic memories of the fans across the globe.

SRK is an actor for his fans, but he himself has lost his identity. He is an actor, businessman, dancer in the weddings, IPL team owner, owner of a production house and so on….! It has put immense pressure on him to perform and he is unable to manage. Many people are of the opinion that he should focus on his business and leave acting to his children. Most of his yesteryear heroines have retired and have accepted their age with grace.

Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Kajol etc. are a few to name. Now, it is right time that Shah Shah Rukh should accept that he is no longer fit to portray a lover boy on the silver screen. He should learn a lesson from his senior Amitabh Bachchan who gracefully accepted his age and has started doing character roles. His character in Baghban is still remembered by his fans. But the question is when will Shah Rukh stop romancing with the heroines half of his age on screen? It is high time that he should accept this fact and act accordingly.
