President of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) city unit Ashish Shelar believes that the party’s resounding victory in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
byelections is because of its people-oriented policies. Those he credited for the win included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, national BJP president Amit Shah, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and president of BJP’s state unit Raosaheb Danve.
In a series of tweets posted on Thursday morning, Shelar celebrated the party’s win. He also thanked the residents of Mumbai, and sepcifically Bhandup, for voting BJP’s Jagruti Patil in the constituency. She beat Shiv Sena’s Minakshi Patil by almost 5,000 votes. Shelar also made use of the win to taunt its saffron ally in the ruling coalition of the state government who had ridiculed BJP during the run-up to the elections.
“Tall claims were made in the Bhandup by-election but voters voted in favour of BJP. The result is a mandate in favour of development drive of Prime MinisterNarendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,” said Shelar about his party’s win.
Congress corporator Pramila Patil passed away on April 25, necessiating the by-elections in the ward. Her daughter-in-law Jagruti contested the election as a BJP candidate.
