With 51 cases of suicides in past two weeks, the toll of distressed farmers by different means have been reached to 800 from January 1 to November 5, 2017 in eight districts of Marathwada region.
Most of farmers ended their lives by hanging themselves, consuming poison or jumping into the well as they were fed up with mounting loans, soil infertility, crops damaged due to recent return of monsoon.
Divisional Commissioner official sources said the highest 167 peasants committed suicides in the drought-prone Beed district while the lowest 43 cases were registered in Hingoli district. Number of cases in other district is Nanded – 124, Parbhani – 109, Aurangabad – 108, Osmanabad – 102, Latur –76 and Jalna – 71, the sources said.
Of 800 cases, 571 cases have been settled so far and provided compensation to their next of kins while 155 claims were rejected following official inquiries made by the administration and the remaining 74 cases are still pending for inquiries, the sources added
