A collegian was held for sending messages in the name the Election Commission of Himachal Pradesh offering to tamper the electronic voting machine for Rs 15 lakh on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Sachin Dutta Rathod (21), resident of Kinwat tehsil of the district, is a student of Ferguson College Pune and presently preparing for competitive examination in Nanded.
From a stolen SIM card, he sent messages in the name of the Election Commission of Himachal Pradesh to 43 persons offering to tamper the electronic voting machine for Rs 15 lakh, of which Rs 10 lakh was to be given before voting and remaining Rs 5 lakh was to be given after declaration of the election results. He assured cent per cent success in the tampering work. It was shocking for the recipient to see the SMS depicting the name of the Election Commission.
A case was filed against the accused at Shimla. His mobile location indicated Hyderabad but later on he was found in Nanded. The accused confessed to have committed an offence for the sake of money, Superintendent of Police Chandrakishor Meena informed.
