As many as 431 persons lost their lives in road mishaps in Indore, the business capital of Madhya Pradesh, in the year 2016.

Among cities, Indore has the highest number of deaths in road accidents in state, far ahead of other cities. Bhopal recorded 248 deaths, Gwalior 244 and Jabalpur 352.

This was revealed in the Ministry for Road Transport and Highways’ report on the road accidents in the country. The report was released yesterday.

The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has taken a serious note of the number of deaths due to road mishaps in the State.

The Commission has sought explanation from the officials in Indore about reasons for such a high number of deaths in the city in road accidents.

It has asked the Collector, the Superintendent of Police and the District Excise Officer to send reports. The panel has asked that what were the reasons for so many deaths and what action was taken to check the mishaps.

It has also sought information as to what steps were taken to stop the menace of drunken driving that leads to many deaths on the roads. The officials have been asked to submit a report in this regard within a period of two weeks.

Among the states that account for highest number of road accidents percentage wise, Tamil Nadu (14.9%) is on the top while Madhya Pradesh is at the second place with 11.2% of accidents.

Madhya Pradesh ranks sixth in terms of number of deaths. UP tops with over 19,000 deaths in road mishaps in the year 2016. It is followed by Tamil Nadu, which recorded 17,200 deaths, Maharashtra that witnessed 12,935 deaths, Karnataka and Rajasthan. MP recorded 9,646 deaths in the year.
